    Rebuilding the

    Grands Montets site

    Targets. But also consultations.

A project that is mindful of the Alpine environment, that has been the focus of a great deal of attention, and it was only after 5 years of discussions, consultations, public enquiries and meetings, consultations with the socio-professionals involved and the valley's high mountain guides, as well as with all the stakeholders, that the project was approved that the project was approved.

A cubic shape? Not by chance.

The massif is populated by geometrically shaped crystals. One of them, pyrite, is the inspiration for this project. The geometric simplicity of a transparent cube leaves plenty of room for the landscape.

More than just a legend, it is an all-weather mountain experience

Built in the early 1960s, the Grands Montets cable car links the Lognan mountain to the summit of the Aiguille des Grands Montets.

Its arrival station at 3275 metres opens the doors to the Argentière basin and its glacier, the starting point for numerous freeride and freerando routes, as well as the doors to the high mountains with the famous Petite Verte mountaineering courses, before offering access to the large neighbouring north faces up to the Aiguille Verte, the Couturier couloir, the Courtes north face and the Droites north face.

Since the fire in 2018 which destroyed the intermediate station, the summit of Grands Montets was no longer accessible by ski lift, but only by ski touring. Our mission is to rebuild this heritage and make the summit accessible again, with the utmost respect for the mountain.

A project in the high mountains is a highly responsible project.

The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc is a company with a mission that makes preserving our natural heritage a priority.

    • - Carbon Footprint and Lifecycle Analysis to rank environmental impacts and identify ways of reducing them: low-carbon concrete, recycled metals, etc.
    • - Efforts to obtain High Environmental Quality (HQE) Sustainable Infrastructures certification.
    • - All companies sign up to the “Low Nuisance Worksite Charter”, covering waste management, noise abatement, pollution control, etc.
    • - Collaboration between companies and experts to limit the impact of the project on biodiversity and landscapes: consultation on work schedules, visits by ecologists, monitoring of environmental assessment measures, etc. Innovating to reduce the impact of the worksite on the natural environment.
    • - Installation of two blondins (Argentière/Lognan and Lognan/sommet) with a transport capacity of 10 tonnes, to limit the use of motorised vehicles and transport materials in difficult terrain. A blondin is a cable car equipped with a lifting system.
    • - Installation of a site cable car (Grands Montets station/La Herse summit) with an 8-seater cabin to facilitate access to the site for personnel. Forty regional companies will be involved, from April 2024 to December 2026, the date of commissioning.

ONE LIFT, TWO SECTIONS, THREE STATIONS
The first section will be equipped with a 10-seater gondola lift to provide the first link between Argentière and Lognan, a single building will house the arrival station for the first installation and the departure station for the second section, complete with a catering area, an office area reserved for operations and a space for the ski patrol and rescue services.
Access to the summit will be provided by « a type 3S detachable cable car » with 24 seats,
This installation is a cross between cable car technology and detachable ski lifts. The aim is not to increase transport capacity. We want to make the installation more comfortable and more resistant to wind so as to guarantee an optimum number of operating days without increasing capacity. This last section takes us to an altitude of over 3,000 metres, on glacier terrain, which is no mean feat. Access is reserved for experienced skiers. In summer, the installation will be used to transport climbers and guarantee pedestrian access in both seasons. In order to meet the new mountain access needs for professionals, the installation closure for the transition between the winter and summer seasons will be minimized to a few days at most. Work has already begun with the dismantling of the stations and pylons 2, 3 and 4. Cleaning and asbestos removal operations are being carried out. The steelwork is being treated and recycled, and in order to preserve the mountain as much as possible, the reconstructions will be carried out on the site of the previous installations. During the work, reception and catering will be provided in temporary buildings provided for this purpose.
